Visualising Decimals |
My students in one group were struggling to realise that a whole number in a decimal was actually made up of tenths. Out came the multilink to show that 1.3 is actually (10 lots of 1/10) and (3 lots of 1/10). We then worked at adding these decimals together. The visual with multilink just helped them put things into perspective without using a foreign piece of maths equipment. The need for decipipes etc would come in later once this original concept was grasped.
